The Bite

Today Spencer bit his BFF Sophia while they were playing outside at Emerson. The dispute apparently started over the playhouse. Sophia wouldn't let Spencer inside, accidentally slamming his fingers at one point. Spencer responded by chomping her on the arm, obviously not an appropriate reaction. Everyone involved was in tears by the time I made it to the playground. I felt like a terrible parent, the mom whose son bites. Luckily the teacher aides and other parents seemed to understand that it's all part of the process. Spencer, ordinarily so sweet-tempered and verbal, still needs to work on impulse control, especially in situations where he feels frustrated. Children need to learn how to resolve conflicts, how to deal with frustration and how friends treat each other.
